Better News: Building trust with rural communities

It's All Journalism

CHAPTER

The History of Journalism in Rural Alabama

A lot of rural Alabama communities don't have their own source of news that's for them, at least not one that publishes more than like once a month. And so when I'm going in, they have this history in their head of journalists from either other statewide outlets or national outlets who come for the problems. One example is lounge county which is a neighboring county to Montgomery where I am right now. It has historically lacked access to sewage systems because of the way that the soil is there and just the poverty levels it costs a lot of money to run a septic tank that's going to work in these areas.
