Yuri and drop off was dragged into World War II as a young man when Operation Barbarossa traumatized the Soviet Union. He conceived of Operation Ryan to preempt a surprise nuclear attack from the West. Russians believed a surprise attack would come during a holiday, he says. All while NATO rehearsed a nuclear war.
