Many eighteenth century aristocrats cherished their noble rights just as closely as citizens of modern democracies. They viewed their privileges as inalienable, just as we do with our rights. The clergy were an even smaller proportion of the population than the nobility. In 17 99, there were about 100 thousand clergy men and women in france out of a total population of over 20 million.
