The Buddha's doctrine is called the middle way, which is neither ascetic nor hedonistic. He saw that a person trying to get rid of pain was still fundamentally afraid of it. The attempt to solve problems that are basically insoluble and to work at it through your whole life, that is dukkha. Dukkha means suffering in a very generalized sense,. you could call it chronic frustration.
