The Role of Brown Seaweed in Coral Growth
When corals die, they leave an empty space that's quickly colonized by seaweed. Certain types of seaweed can accordingly be used as a proxy to gauge coral die-offs. Gomez-Cabrera and her team went diving at the Great Barrier Reef to collect sediment. They found seaweed DNA from as far back as 750 years ago.
