Evangelicals, I'm Not Bashing Mary, but the Earliest You've Given Me Is Something From the Fourth Century, Right?
The earliest instances we have of people talking and maybe even agreeing that mary was immaculate are in the pro evangelium of james. It implies more about a miraculous, if not aimmaculate, conception of mary. And it's generally rejected in apologetic protestant literature as hyperbolic. The best argument comes up by someone who has strangely become a champion amongst evangelicals: father raymond brown.
