CHAPTER

Digital Literacy and Civility in a Democracy

How can we encourage the kind of civility that will allow a genuine conversation, and not just an entrenchment of polarized views? It's not just how we structure the digital public sphere, but it's how we participate in it. And so many people go on line, and there's not been any cultivation of what it means to be a good on line citizen. There also hasn't been much cultivation about what we take on line as truth and what's rumor, and how to sort through it. So i think that the total digital literacy, which includes henorms of civility, are critical, in addition to how we structure these forms.
