The vocal tract is a tube. Within the vocal tract, we have areas that are more open and areas that areMore constricted. When i am speaking, when you are in the process of doing vowels, just say this to me, say o e, o, e. You will feel the lips close down and constrict on the o,. The open more on the e, on the o youl. And then we have the area of the vocal tract that is the pharynx, or the throat. So we have just above the vocal folds all the way to the top of the throat - which is going to separate it from the mouth. These are resonant spaces.
