Natalie Diaz — Of Course She Looked Back

Poetry Unbound

CHAPTER

The Erasure of Sodom

Natalie Diaz was born and raised in the Fort Mojave Indian village in Niedles, California. She is a linguist too and she's also worked with the last speakers of Mojave. Her poem describes Lot's wife who looked back at Sodom after it had been destroyed by angels. And we see a new way of looking at a city as something that could be blown away or held tenderly - like blowing a kiss. The story of Sodom can be understood in a certain way to be a motif for the erasure of city and places and peoples and language.
