The catechism is a great teaching tool, but often an overzealous parent forgets to start where the Bible starts. When they're developmentally ready to understand what is an abstract concept, they'll be ready to receive it if you have built a foundation of you are of value because you're made the image of God. "It does affect them to know that they and every other human being was made for God," she says.
