The History of the Irish Changelings

A changelene, according to the folklore of Europe, is a kind of fairy. Stories of them can be found in Germany, Ireland, England, Scandinavia, Spain and many other European countries. They are a substitute for a kidnapped human being. Signs of an adult changeling included mood swings, becoming argumentative, and losing interest in friends and family. It was said that if your infant preferred food from the larder rather than being nursed, there was a chance they weren't really your child at all.
