CHAPTER

The New History of Capitalism and Its Relationship to Economics?

There's a vast extensive literature on the history of slavery and its relationship to economics that goes well beyond what's presented in the sixteent 19 project. The real interesting historical questions to be asking are, how do we trace the role of the us. Governments a history of involvement in the slave economy? And you can get that going all the way back to the very beginning, ove the civil war era. It is basically a rent extraction story, rather than a capitalism story. So they basically made it into a public industry. They made it into something that was supported by the state. I think that's the real takeaway that historians need to be investigating.
