Is Machine Learning Really Using Physical Processes?

Machine learning has added credibility to a lot of these methods for applying climate data problems. Could that be due to researchers like yourself who have done a really good job of feature engineering? Or is it that machine learning is really figuring things out given the right data yet? I think it's a bit of both. It also sparks me new ideas for my research.
