In 1953, Sherpas Charles Evans and Tom Bodilit reached the false summit of Everest. Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay set out to reach the true summit three days later. At this altitude, the wind comes directly from the jet stream. With no ropes to prevent a fall, the only way up is to scale the outcrop in a method known as chimneying.
