The most important thing about dealing with a challenge is being able to handle the response. Shikatanai means can't be helped, and it's a very common saying among the Japanese. So what are we going to do now? And for me, that is the essence of taking responsibility for self.
Learning to deal with challenges, whether external or self-inflicted, involves taking responsibility for self. When we do this we increase our ability to respond to change and uncertainty.
