The Cowboy Mythology
The enduring myth of the cowboy serves a certain role and a certain purpose in american mythology. Sometimes could be developed into more high-minded films right trying to make some sort of bigger statement such as high noon or the searchers or shane you can see slight adjustments of the formula to fit with these particular themes. The gun is a phallic symbol it represents masculine independence which can be wielded for good or for ill so the cowboy shows an effort to reconcile this basic american tension between individualism and collectivity individualism and conformism.
