Topiary in the Garden, Helen
There are certainly some 17th century ones, but then Victorians in that energetic way of theirs decided to do a formal group of topiary. But I think even the Victorians, they fell victim to deer. And it is quite interesting what happened in Scotland in the gloomy 20th century. All the men disappeared off all the energetic men, disappeared off to war, and there was nobody left to sculpture the topiary. There are pictures of it at the end of the 19th century, and all the topiary is very thin and elegant. The difficulty with topiary is either, if I do it myself, which I do sometimes, or get other people to do it,.
