Hogarth sold most of his drawings to exactly the people he was mocking. Jane Austen novels were read by exactly the class. The audience is like the thing that satire does something, but in fact it is mostly to leave themselves satisfied rather than angry. Think about the way that journalists act about the day today. You know, I mean, we all got brought up on the day. We got the word news and many newsrooms have had has got this kind of comedic sort of tone around it from the dayToday.
