A new paper in Nature is starting to provide some data on what difference it might actually make. Previous research has shown that people are more creative when they're less focused. Melanie Brooks wanted to directly compare in-person and virtual conversations. She looked at how much participants felt they connected with the other through self-report, as well as unconscious connection through mimicry. We also looked at whether there was cross talk for people or talking over each other for communication coordination. For the social connection, no difference between conditions. Even controlling for these differences, we still find that the virtual condition performs worse when it comes to idea generation.
