The Mughal Empire was vast, stretching across 1400 miles to Dhaka in Bangladesh. Unlike the Iranian Safavids or the Ottoman Turks, it ruled an overwhelmingly non-Muslim people. Close contacts with holy men were a fundamental part of the life and outlook of the Mughal elite. Regular meetings with religious figures were a key political strategy of the state.
