Nemo creator Andrew Stanton wanted to make an animation with the same emotional poignancy without needing to sacrifice zoological accuracy. Fans have suggested some alternative interpretations of what happens in the opening sequence. One theory is that Nemo is merely Marlin's imaginary friend, which he envisions as a coping mechanism because he cannot deal with the reality that his wife ate their kids.
