The Language of England in the Mid-1300s
In the mid-1300s, a law was passed requiring English to be spoken in courts. But when it came time to write down verdict or judgment on docket, proceedings were preserved in Latin. Law reflected views of rising middle class who preferred use of English over French. It's often said by scholars that this law made English the official language of England again.
