I teach a class in ushiva university where we discuss the fundamentals of jewish thought and commitment. A consistent theme that i think the overwhelming majority of students ask is, why can't i just be a good person? The way contemporary western liberal education works is really the embrace of the individual. And when it comes to religious affiliation, you are being invited into a room where the primary value through which you interpret and find satisfaction is not just individual residence. In many ways, it is connecting to a community. Does that still make sense? What do we lose by discarding religion, and what gain by embracing it?
