The original Luddites were weavers who had prospered from the invention of mechanical spinning, which gave them ample supplies of thread. And now they were losing their jobs to power loops and so they were mad. They engaged in both non-violent civic activity, petitioning, parliament, and that sort of thing, and also violent riots and smashing looms. In a richer society, there are things that can be done with redistribution to ease those transitions. There's considerable evidence that people are more locked into place than they used to be.
