Joel shows up but it's not with Ellie. It's with Tess. All of a sudden we get our bearings as an audience. Oh, we're in the past when Tess was still alive. This is how their little smuggling operation actually started. Bill and Frank are the allies they're smuggling with. These are the familiar elements of the engine that we were looking for getting introduced back into the episode. We know Bill's going to die. And we are going to have to watch the end of this tragic love story.
