Liberalism is not jus that it sees nature as an obstacle. It deconstructs the realm of culture. Our tradition is we don't have one. Our culture is we don’t have a i think that's a very deep, interesting way to think about it. I think this is to exstent i think we had a kind of a remnant culture t was obviously informed by an older christian understanding of the human person. That persisted for a time. The argument of my book is that the underlying political philosophy had its own logic that eventually dissembled a that culture and that tradition. And that's where we find ourselves to day.
Political Scientist and author Patrick Deneen of the University of Notre Dame talks about his book Why Liberalism Failed with EconTalk host Russ Roberts. By liberalism, Deneen means the modern enterprise--the push for self-actualization free of the constraints of tradition, family, and religion that typifies modern culture. He argues that both the left and the right have empowered the state and reduced liberty. He argues for a smaller, more local, more artisanal economy and a return to the virtues of self-control and self-mastery.
