We assume that we're going to know what the right goal is. One of the things I study in my lab is cheating. What this suggests is if we have motivated reasoning, sometimes we can talk ourselves into why I should buy the iPhone X instead of put money away for retirement. Why it's okay? Why I deserve to eat the Ben and Jerry's at 2 AM or cheat someone else.
