The End of the Silk Road
Mongols were eventually driven out of China, who by a leader who said Mongols were right, they just weren't tough enough. But although a new Chinese dynasty, the Ming, did manage to reassert Chinese control, the Mongols actually retreated back into Mongolia. So China is really rather too preoccupied with its northern frontier to expend much effort on trying to control the Silk Road. And also, they had an unfortunate problem with Tibet, which had been part of the Mongol Empire and became close in terms of religion.
