White home owners and harlem saw this influx of new black residents as a threat to their land values. Community groups did everything within their power to demonize their new black neighbors, fueled by a resurgence of openly races sentiment against african americans. The old harlem residence of german or english heritage would soon abandon the neighborhood, fleeing to the borrougs or eventually to the brand new suburbs. But the colliers, they didn't leave. They simply retreated.
