Is the explanation for a rise of popularism economic? Or is it cultural? It seems to me like here we have a nice example of how those two things go together. In this upper middle class you manage to create a bunch of people who were both rich, getting richer, and culturally detaching from the rest of society. And so you saw the detachment happening on multiple dimensions at once. That's what really makes for class fracture. If it was just economics, it would be much less it was just culture, if it was gjust geography. But it was all of them at the same time.
