The Legacy of Alice Herdlichke

Alice Herdlichke was the Smithsonian's first curator of Physical Anthropology. He became obsessed with measuring everything about humans, and he'd target populations that often wouldn't or couldn't give consent. One study from 1898 measured nearly 1,000 white and black children from juvenile asylums in New York. It was the late 19th century, and eugenics at this time was becoming more popular.
