The Middle Class Crisis in the Conservative Party
I think there's something very new here which is going on and that's a sort of middle-class crisis. If you were here 50 or 80 years ago, the idea that the middle-class lifestyle would have been upper-middle class but not outrageously expensive. There's no way you can do that now, a multi-million-pound income a year. The sacrifices that need to be made to do that very often involve saying, well, I'm not going to be too particular about what I go into. And that is leading to a sort of desperation amongst traditional conservative voters because they don't have the meats that's being thrown to them to keep them happy.
