Solzhenitsyn has sort of an ontological commitment to a world that the proper response to which is gratitude. For gift that has been given to us by nature or God. We didn't make it, but we have as Solzhenitsyn puts it in the Nobel Lecture, a profound responsibility for it. And that responsibility is inseparably moral and political, of course.
