Every day they must wash their faces and heads, and they do in the dirtiest and filthiest fashion possible. They are like wild donkeys. So you can see here clearly, especially in Ibn Fadlan's account, a clash of standards of purity and disgust. But nonetheless in the Vikings' defense, we should note some things. For one thing, they came from a cold climate with very few diseases. There are no known epidemics to have broken out in the Viking Age.
