Xenophon and the Carduchian Defile

Xenophon and his army crossed the Kentrittis River in western Armenia. The region between Lake Van and the modern Iranian border was part of the Persian Satrapi of Armenia. Persians had dispatched a major force to block their route northwards. Xenophon's scouts quickly found another fort across the river, but before he could get his army there to cross it, the Persians moved and blocked this one as well. Luckily, Xenophon sent a small force back towards the other fort, which caused the anxious Persians to attach a major part of theirs. Then, Xenophon stormed and completely overwhelmed the force remaining at his fort, while the Greek detachment made it to the other
