Psychotherapy - What Is Counter Transference?
The clinitian's counter transference in the interview is also an important potential source of information. The patient may react to the interviewer as if she were treating him like one of his parents did. Signs of counter transference include uncustomary ways in which the clinition treats the patient, and the clination experiencing impulses to treat the patient in a manner not characteristic of her. A dependent patient may behave an overtly submissive and passive fashion. This behaviour may elicit either irritation or a more sympathetic, kindly parental reaction from the clinician who might correspondingly experience an impulse to behave in an impatient manner.
