The Go Political Dilemma

Russia has made it clear that it will do everything to remain the preponderant military power in the region. In the region, at least as things stand now, russia enjoys escalation dominance. It seems more ready to escalate militarily and be more reckless than its adversaries. Trump does not seem prepared to put up a fight for europe's sake. So how can the west, and particularly europe, get around this?
