Free will does not mean you can establish the curriculum, it just means you can decide what you want to take at a given time. Jesus is like, well, let's go a little more than that, because the holy spiritis standing by. He doesn't care whether people call themselves atheist or hindu or buddhist or christian or whatever. Basically, he sang that even in this world, it is i that rule my destiny. What happens is what i desire, and what does not occur is what i do not want to happen.
