The Democrats won a landslide in the election of 1964, as we know. LBJ was reelected with a huge mandate to push through major social reforms and equal rights. The Tet Offensive by the north of Vietnamese had made big inroads. And it was pretty clear that no victory for South Vietnam and its American allies looked inside.
