The essential nature of his traditional heroism is the very thing that made him suffer. The world is no longer a mysterious place where people just suffer, right? It's a place where he's screwed up, and now he has a chance to fix it. I think what you learn as an external audience is to trace out sort of e patterns of causality and responsibility. You can always make a different argument about odysseus, and people will. But i think the choice that he made in telling the story is to say, that was my fault."
