The Monk's Pear Pit

The monk dug a hole in the ground and buried his pear pit. When he asked for water green shoots sprouted from the ground. It was an incredible sight as it grew into a tree bearing large fragrant pears. The farmer refused to give them away because they were 'mine' A bystander who had been watching walked over to the farmer holding out a coin. He said: I'll buy a pear if you hand me one of your own" So the farmer gave him a pear, but only after being told that there would be no free ones.
