The Difference Between Literary Rhythm and Unscripted Speech
An author of books using just words on a page doesn't have the luxury that a composer of music has in indicating the techniques of sustaining a note or changing using rubato. We, audiobook narrators, we see the words coming at us off the page at the same rate every minute,. And yet that doesn't convey the way real conversation lives and breathes and changes pace does it? So I'm conscious of the difference between literary rhythm and the actual rhythms of unscripted speech. What do you think? You're completely right that we don't have the mechanism. But I think that that's what the white space is. Yeah.
