We're watching somebody burn his own soul to save the person he loves. He's got a beautiful composition unforgiven where he's like Clint Eastwood is not the fastest shot. It's that Hannibal Lecter thing he ate her face and his heart rate never went above 68 or whatever. When Joel dissociates and enters this mode, he is simply calmer than everyone else. And man, he really is good at it.
