The Dairy Industry's Dirty Little Secret
Norma hurt a worker when they tried to take Nina away from her. And so part of the reason that they took Nina away, obviously, or any baby away from their mothers is that they're dairy producers. The dairy goes for human consumption, not for infant cow consumption. So Norma's was at this small farm, it wasn't a super industrialized dairy operation. But given that Nina could replace her in making the milk that would leave people to enjoy these carefully crafted cheese and thus produce more happiness, pleasure, or utility, it would have been fine for the farm to send Norma to slaughter.
