The captain does not step in. The active first officer, who's the one being replaced, said, do you see how he does whatever he pleases? Some days he doesn't work at all. So they keep arguing, and eventually it was decided that the relief first officer was going to go ahead o take over at this point ahead of schedule. Shortly after this the sound of the cockpit door operating was recorded on the cockpet voice recorder.
