As he was reflected upon his life, it seemed to me there was a kind of a resentment towards the wealthy too. Even though he knew he was living off the wealthy, he would say in some of those interspersed reflections that they drained him of some of his vitality. For Hemingway, the horror of the story is the idea that you could die rich and comfortable and never achieve. But these achievements come with a cost too and they come with dangers.
