There aren't as many women and minorities in positions of professorial jobs across the board in STEM, but especially in mathematics. There's almost no racial differences in any of the motivational styles among races. So you're going to find something that might be an evolutionary replacement to Maslow's hierarchy of needs. But it seems to me still it's kind of a systemic argument for systemic issues separate from what we should do about it.

For too long, the term insubordination has evoked negative feelings and mental images. But for ideas to evolve and societies to progress, it’s vital to cultivate rebels who are committed to challenging conventional wisdom and improving on it. Change never comes easily. And most would-be rebels lack the skills to overcome hostile audiences who cling desperately to the way things are.
