The Metaphysical Debate

Philosophy is at root a debate over metaphysics. If you are trying to figure out whether two things are in fact identical, there's a test for this. Plato and Descartes have argued for mind-body dualism. Nestorius proposed that Mary gave birth to Christ insofar as Christ was human. And if anyone refuses to admit that the word of God suffered by being crucified, then he is to be considered anathema.
