"I am a Christian theologian. And I do not want to see the symbols of Christianity co-opted by anyone," he says. With that view in mind, how do you feel about the term Christian nationalist? "What I said was people will throw that term against any conservative Christian who believes in the importance of nation and conservative political convictions ... If you believe Christianity should influence the nation, I'm not going to run from that."
