How to Be the Next Margaret Sullivan
Don't be a journalist because you'll have a hard time finding a job, Sullivan tells young journalists. "Learn about something, become an expert or at least proficient in health," she says. Get that experience early through working on student publications and getting unpaid internships. The core thing is reporting; I would rather see a resume from somebody who's been a reporter at a lesser place than some other role that's not reporting at a greater place.
